Melbourne in Winter

I love Melbourne. It is such a gorgeous place to live. Today I spent the day wandering around the city enjoying the rather mild winter weather, with the lovely company of my friend Kelly enjoying the pleasures the city has to offer. We started off with a fantastic chocolate tour and then wandered around for a while with our two gorgeous little men and finally stopped for a late lunch at a random cafe.

The great thing about Melbourne is that it doesn’t matter which way you point your camera there is always something interesting or pretty to see. You don’t even have to be a particularly good photographer to capture it either. Most of these photos were taken with the technique referred to as “shooting from the hip”. Which literally means taking the photo without looking through the viewfinder. You just point it in a direction, push the focus button and snap away.

It’s a technique i tend to use quite a lot because it s a great way to loosen yourself up and take away the preciousness of capturing “the perfect image”. You end up with some crazy random images, but often you will get a few gems that you never would have captured if you had tried to do it deliberately.

It’s good fun, i recomend you try it.

For those interested in the technical side of things these were all taken with a Canon 350D and a Canon 85mm f1.8 lens.
